Info
Today computer hard drives are huge and handling all that real estate takes some skill and planning. Over the lifetime of your hard drive your needs and design of your hard drive layout may change. Partition Magic makes that hard and time consuming task an easy and painless task.
New features are merging NTFS partitions, support for up to 80 GB drive, integration with Windows Defragmenter and supports external USB drives. Some limitations are that it is not designed to perform on removable media and it won't work on Windows 2000 dynamic drives.
Rescue disks can be made to run Partition Magic from floppy disks under DOS, Windows 3.1 and Linux. Two floppy disks are needed to create a disk set.
It is recommended that you have a backup of your hard drive before running the program, although I've never had any version of Partition Magic corrupt my data during its operation, so it may be a reasonable risk if you haven't made a backup. Running scandisk and defragmentation before running this utility would be a good procedure. Utilities such as virus detection, backups and defragmentation need to be disabled before running Partition Magic, instructions for this is given in the manual.
The program can be run off any local hard drive in any version of Windows 95 or later, otherwise it needs to be run from floppy. Running from a floppy does now allow the use of program wizards or the option of undoing the last changes.
Hard drive partition formats that can be operated on are FAT, FAT16x, FAT32, FAT32x,Linux Ext2, Linux Swap, NTFS, Extended and Extended X,. Unformatted and unallocated areas can be manipulated by the program. FAT partitions utilize a file allocation table, used by DOS and all versions of Windows, FAT16x is used beyond 8 GB, FAT32 and FAT32x are a 32 bit versions for up to 2 TB hard drives. Linux Ext2 is a partition used by the Linux operating system for up to 4 TB size. NTFS if the format that can be used by Windows NT and 2000. Extended partitions are used to go beyond the limit of four physical partitions.
Partition Magic performs an integrity check on your drive when the program starts and those drives are then displayed in the main screen. The main window of Partition Magic has the usual menu bar, toolbar and status bar and a number of windows. A window shows a tree view of drives on your computer, another window shows both graphically and textually the partitions on your drives. The status bar identifies the command that the cursor is positioned over on the menu bar or the toolbar. Wizards for common actions using Partition Magic appear in a window on the lower portion of the main screen, these Wizards aren't available if running from the rescue disks.
You select the hard drive and partition to operate on from this main display, then select an operation to be performed. A number of operations can be selected and placed in a queue, you then can see a preview of the results and revise the list of operations if desired, when satisfied then you can choose to apply the changes. Before any operation is started an integrity check is done on the drive at the conclusion of an operation another integrity check is performed. Actions are not started unless the data passes this check. Partition Magic will report if it can correct any errors it finds and ask if you wish to have it do so. Individual partitions are also checked before and after operations on them.
Partitions can be moved or resized. When this operation is selected a dialog box appears showing the free space before and after the partition and the amount of space used by data in the partition. The function of moving or resizing can be done by mouse dragging in the graphical representation of the partition or by numerical entry in the text area. On the graphical display size limits are indicated for the maximum size allowed for a bootable partition or the minimum size demanded by a bootable partition.
Partitions can be created in unallocated space on the drive. The partition can be primary or logical using any of the partition types supported. Additional bootable partitions can be created in any of the partition types. Partitions can be deleted and newly in this version undeleted. You are able to copy a partition. Also partitions of similar type can be merged as well as splitting a partition in two.
Other operations are relettering a partition or hiding and unhiding a partition. Cluster sizes in FAT partitions can be changed to minimize the wasting of disk space. Partition type conversions are from FAT to FAT32, NTFS; FAT32 to FAT, NTFS; NTFS to FAT, FAT32. Primary and logical partitions can be converted to the other. Wizards exist to create new partitions, resize, spread free space equally between all partitions merge, copy and hide partitions.
An option for Windows NT, 2000 and XP use is to create 64K FAT clusters allowing partitions of 4 GB. You can also skip checking a drive for bad sectors to save time, if you had done that previously of if your drive does that automatically. Also the program can be run without performing any changes in a read only mode.
Included also in the Partition Magic package is Drive Mapper, this application remaps your disk after drive letter changes are made by Partition Magic. This is a tremendous time saver by not requiring reinstallation of applications after manipulating partitions.
Boot Magic is an included application that creates multiple bootable primary partitions allowing for more than one operating system to reside on your computer. A menu selection of operating systems appears at boot up. Operating systems supported are the multiple flavors of DOS and Windows as well as Linux and BeOS. A rescue disk can be created and is recommended if you use Boot Magic.
PQBoot is an included utility that provides for multiple bootable primary partitions. It is designed for occasional use if you are not using Boot Magic.
Partition Magic is compatible for use with Norton Disk Doctor, Norton Antivirus and Norton SystemWorks if the cautions given in the manual are followed. Instructions are given to use Partition Magic with DriveSpace. Hard drive overlay utilities such as EZ-Drive, Pro-Drive, Maxblast and Ontrack have to be installed before Partition Magic for it to be compatible with those systems, instructions for booting from floppy are given if you are using these.
A good size paper manual is provided. The manual is very thorough in explaining the features and use of the programs. Included are scenarios for many typical operations that a person may want to perform.
