The Thaw Movie review Review
The Thaw is a brand new film based in Canada of all places and stars Val Kilmer and Martha MacIsaac. Val Kilmer is a thespian but not many would know that he is a classically trained actor what with all the really bad movies he has done over the years. Marttha MacIsaac was in Superbad and most recently the remake of Last House on the Left and is carving out a nice niche as the cute but ackward girl next door.
In the Thaw a deadly prehistoric parasite is released when a Woolly Mammoth is discovered in a melting ice cap. Faced with a potentially global epidemic, four ecology students must destroy the parasite before it reaches the rest of civilization. One-by-one they are infected and one-by-one they turn on each other. Soon the survivors are left with only one choice - to make the ultimate sacrifice and burn everything to the ground... including themselves.
This weekend I have watched a ton of films and reviewed them and for the most part they have all dissapointed me in some way with the exception of The Children. Thank goodness for The Thaw as its one of those rare breeds of nature gone awry horror films that sticks with you and scares the crap out of you all in the same breath. It has elements of The Thing and The Last Winter starring Ron Perlman and is easily one of the best isolated and nature related horror movie I have seen.
Val Kilmer steps away from all the low budget action flicks he has been doing to deliver a fantastic performance as a research doctor who discovers a new bug that could easily wipe out mankind and must fight to stop it. Overall this is the kind of film that if you have a bug phobia it will only be worse once you watch this film.
Although somewhat predictable and filled with cgi the film packs a great punch with great acting a unique story and some pretty good overall FX. The film has a very indie look and feel to it that works well for this film and the overall cold tones make you really feel you are in the deep colds of Canada stuck in a research station.
I would say this is a must see for fans of The Thing and if you liked The last Winter you will love The Thaw. Hell if you are like me and hated The Last winter you will still love the Thaw. Finally an eco horror movie done right!
