Concept designer Aisen Caro Chacin has invented the tongue controlled MP3 player that allows you to listen to your favorite music using bone conduction. Chacin calls his invention the Play-A-Grill. It’s a combination of digital music and a grill, which are those supposedly fashionable mouth pieces some music artists have been seen wearing.
The problem is, they don’t look great when worn, and it’s not something we could see the modern day teenager using without getting hassled. It also looks pretty uncomfortable to wear. Anyone who has had braces knows how irritating retainers are, and this is pretty much the equivalent.
This technology works because of the grill that sits on your teeth. The sound can be transmitted using bone conduction through your skull rather than by the more traditional speakers or headphones. And as there’s no speaker, only you can hear the music as long as your ears are plugged.
There seems to be no details about how much a Play-A-Grill would cost, but I imagine because it has a mouth fitting you’d need to build in some kind of adjustment or custom make each unit, which is going to keep the price high.
While I can’t see this being a popular alternative to an iPod and speakers, people with disabilities could benefit from the tongue controlled device if they have limited movement.
