Review of Going The.Distance
Going the Distance, directed by Nanette Burstein from a script by Geoff LaTulippe, is an economy-class Up in the Air. A romantic comedy about two young people trying to balance life and love while separated from each other by thousands of miles, it opts for indie rock, post-pubescent gags and a general mood of Judd Apatow-style smut in place of the knowing ironies and George Clooney-glazed sophistication of Jason Reitman’s film.
The two young people are real-life, on-off couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long: she plays Erin, 31, a late-blooming intern who’s travelled to New York to take up a summer gig at a city newspaper; he’s Garrett, working at a struggling record label, and a bit of a loser in love. Mere hours after he’s broken up with his latest squeeze, he finds himself being ribbed by his trash-talking pals Dan (Charlie Day) and Box (Jason Sudeikis) at a local bar, only to come across Erin, whose video-gaming skills he worships. Soon they’re at his place, hitting the bong, and making out to Berlin’s Take My Breath Away.
