Portability enhances this simple drag-and-drop freeware file archiver. 7-Zip Portable's plain seven-button interface makes the app quick to learn and easy to operate. Help is short and sweet, but additional information is available online.
Adding files to an archive is easily accomplished by dragging them to the program's interface. Drop a file and the Add to Archive display opens with various user options. You can pick from five formats, from the traditional ZIP to 7-Zip's own. There are six compression levels, three compression methods, 13 dictionary sizes, 12 word sizes, 20 block sizes, and CPU threading. The screen also allows you to easily enter passwords for encryption, split the archive into volumes, update, freshen, replace, or synchronize files. All options can be quickly set from pull-down menus, or left as default for faster archiving.
Decompression isn't readily available with drag and drop, but 7-Zip uses a standard file browser to choose files. Extracting is a mere matter of clicking the file to copy from the archive and pressing one button. By default, the app copies to the same folder, or you can click another button to open a file browser. The process is intuitive and fast.
7-Zip Portable fits easily on a USB drive, operates flawlessly, and will satisfy all basic archiving needs. Novices will find it easy to use, and experienced users will like the program's many easily set options.
