Sometimes a baby is born with a hole in septum. This hole can cause mixing of blood from the two sides of human heart. Mixing of oxygen filled blood with oxygen less blood can cause serious medical conditions for babies in particular. However in last couple of decade, detection and treatment of ‘Congenital Heart Disease’ has improved a lot. Now a child with simple heart defect can reach adulthood and live a perfectly healthy life. These holes are categorized as small, medium and large.
Moe than 50 percent of holes found in infants are small holes. These holes have no effect on baby’s health and automatically close with the passage of time. Medium and large size holes can cause heart failure, growth failure, Arrhythmias (Irregular heartbeats), etc.
Treatment of congenital heart defect is widely available these days. Most of these holes are repaired in infancy or early childhood through surgery or catheter depending upon the size of hole, its location and child’s age.
